Show #10: June 26 - July 2

The last show made in Ottawa!  After this, If It Rotates is moving to Toronto, so we'll see what kind of records I can find there... thanks to all my Ottawa family, you know I love you all. So it's a real grab-bag show for Show #10 - I continue to love the Juan Carlos Caceres LP 'Malon' so I play another track off of it, we get another Muhammad Ali related track, some more Brazillian sounds, some rock-ish tracks, a Can track... all over the map, really.

Show #9: June 19-25

When I plan these shows, sometimes I think that consistent themes are the way to go, and other times I think it's best if it's just a big jumble of groovy music.  This week is definitely the latter!  Everything starts off with some Soca in honour of Trinidad and Tobago's first appearance at the World Cup in Germany, and from there we're off in all directions - there's a reggae cover of Hot Chocolate, a Brazillian tinged groove from Quebec, a crazed Jerk track from Robert Charlebois, and a funk song sung by children.  Like I said, a real jumble!

Lord Shorty and the Vibrations International - Vibrations Groove
Boo and the Trutones - You Sexy Thing
Heavyweight - Muhammad Ali (Float Like a Butterfly Sting Like A Bee)
Explosion - Funky Mama
The Budos Band - Up From the South
Clan Murphy - Eventail
Robert Charlebois & Louise Forestier - Engagement
Juan Carlos Caceres - Go Home
Ocho - Hot Pants Road
The Meters - Hand Clapping Song
Juggy - Oily
Faze-O - Good Thang
The Blackbyrds - Do It, Fluid
Patrizia and Jimmy - Trust Your Child
Marcia Griffiths - Truly

Show #8: June 12-18

1 You know, I've never really liked 80s nights - too much irony in the air, I think. That said, this episode of If It Rotates is dedicated to the 80s, with tracks from 1980 to 1986 (and a closer from 1978, but let's just overlook that).  Sure, some of them have their cheesy moments, and you might be tempted to write them off, but give 'em a try, and see if you're not humming one of the tunes in your head a bit later...

Change - Change of Heart (1984)
Petria - I Miss Your Love (1986)
Chas Jankel - 109 (Give Me Something I Can Remember) (1981)
Distance feat. Janey Hallett - Just One More Kiss (1984)
Whispers - It's A Love Thing (1980)
DJ Watkins & Crew - Jealousy (Rap) (1985)
Prince Charles and the City Beat Band - Don't Fake the Funk (1984)
Yarbrough & Peoples - Don't Stop the Music (1980)
Padlock - Seventh Heaven (1983)
Bobby Caldwell - What You Won't Do For Love (1978)1

Show #7: June 5-11

Bollywood puts out more films per year than Hollywood, and that means a lot of soundtracks. In the 70s and 80s, the writers and arrangers of these soundtracks started bringing elements of funk and disco into their songs, and produced some seriously funky records. I wanted to take the chance to play my collection of funky Bollywood records - I don't have that many, but those that I have, I like a lot. The first half of the show is all Bollywood, and then it's more soundtracks for the second half!

opening dialogue: Bhappi Lahiri - 'Nothing Is Impossible' from 'Zakhmee' (Odeon, 1974)
Kalyanji Anandji - Laila O Laila from 'Qurbani' (Polydor, 1979)
RD Burman - Aa Dekhen Jara from 'Rocky' (Polydor, 1980)
Kalyanji Anandji - Music from 'Rafoo Chakkar' (Odeon, 1974)
RD Burman - Chand Mera Dil (start) from 'Hum Kisise Kum Naheen' (Odeon, 1977)
RD Burman - Sanam Tum Jahan from 'Kaalia' (Polydor 1981)
RD Burman - Chand Mera Dil (end) from 'Hum Kisise Kum Naheen' (Odeon, 1977)
RD Burman - Tum Jaise Ko Payal Men Bandh Loon from 'Garam Masala' (Odeon, 1972)
Lalo Schifrin - On the Way to San Mateo from 'Bullitt' (Warner Brothers)
Morton Stevens - Front Street from 'Hawaii Five-O' (Capitol)
Piero Piccioni - Mystery / The Discotheque from 'Puppet on a Chain' (repressed by DC recordings)
Lalo Schifrin - Theme from Enter the Dragon from 'Enter the Dragon' (Warner Brothers, 1973)
Beltran Moner - Finishing Line, from 'Formula 1' (repressed by Wah-Wah (Spain))
Solomon Burke - The Bus from 'Cool Breeze' (MGM, 1972)
Joe Simon - Theme from Cleopatra Jones from 'Cleopatra Jones' (Warner Brothers, 1973)
Willie Hutch - Ain't That Mellow Mellow from 'Foxy Brown' (Motown, 1974)

(Please note that for the Bollywood section I'm crediting the writers and not the performers - it's just simpler this way. If you hear a woman's voice, it's probably Asha Bhosle)
