Show #24: October 30 - November 5

It's a celebration!  Show #24 means that I've recorded enough tracks for one full day of funky music without interruption (or repetition!). I figured that's a good enough reason for a celebration, and so I pulled out some of my favorite tracks for this show - there's a smoking latin beginning with an awesome awesome version of 'Que Se Sepa' (and if you only know the Roberto Roena version, definitely check this out), and then a cool Polish track (Bemibem - I LOVE this song), and then that great Pedro Ruy Blas groove.  The second half is African music, with some real winners - from the somewhat stoned sound of the Hedzoleh Soundz to the warm tones of Feso Trombone, to the funky Marijata.  And the whole thing ends with Gabonese musician Pierre Akendengue's great ' Sesi' (and if you like this, he's also got some really good acoustic guitar songs that I'd like to play at another time, too - stay tuned).

Cortijo & His Time Machine - Carnaval
Hector Rivera - I Want A Chance For Romance
El Nuevo Conjunto Universal - Que Se Sepa
Bemibem - Podaruj Mi Troche Slonce
Pedro Ruy Blas / Dolores - El Jaleo
Hugh Maskekela & Hedzoleh Soundz - Languta
Feso Trombone - Beginning of the End
T.P. Orchestre Poly-Rhythmo de Coutonou - Kou Tche Kpo So O
Marijata - Mother Africa
Pierre Akendengue - Sesi

Show #23 - October 23 - 29

Back to the funk!  I'm back after last week's hiatus with a really heavy show - some of my funkiest tunes, with real driving beats and heavy drums - just what you look for in a funk tune!  Some top names in this show: Lee Fields, the Fabulous Counts, Quincy Jones... and the super fast funk of the Interpretations - I think I clocked that one at over 150 BPM!  If you like the funk (and really, why would you be at this website otherwise?) then you can't go wrong with this show.

Quincy Jones - Theme from They Call Me Mister Tibbs
Dynamic Corvettes - Funky Music Is the Thing (part 2)
Chuck Carbo - Can I Be Your Squeeze
Bobby Williams - Funky Superfly (part 2)
Ann Sexton - You're Losing Me
Lee Fields - She's A Love Maker
The Fabulous Counts - Girl from Kenya
The Nite Liters - Afro Strut
Cassieta George - Let's Get Together
The Meters - Groovy Lady
Gil Scott Heron and Brian Jackson - It's Your World
Powerhouse - Rough Ride
The Chefs - Mr. Machine (part 1)
Lavell Kamma - I Know Where It's At
Shirley Ellis - Soul Time
Coasters - Love Potion Number Nine
Little Eva Harris - Get Ready Uptight
The Interpretations - Snap Out
Latin Souls - The Party Is Over

Show #22: October 9 - 15

Show #22!  Kind of all over the map, but some of my favorites here... Michael Jackson's Ain't No Sunshine kicks it all off, and from there we check some Blaxploitation, revisit some classic Curtis, hit some smooth disco grooves, and then move into a Brazillian / Latin set - a cool boogaloo by El Gran Combo on a record I just picked up, the best version of Mas Que Nada that I know, and much more!

Michael Jackson - Ain't No Sunshine
Joe Simon - Theme from Cleopatra Jones
Gerson King Combo - God Save the King
Curtis Mayfield - Superfly
Rhythm Makers - Soul on Your Side
Isley Brothers - That Lady (part 1)
Erlon Chaves - Eu Tambem Quero Mocoto
Ed Lincoln - Eu Nao Vou Mais
Ivan Lins - Hey Voce
Zito Righi - Berimbau
Luciano Perrone - Samba Vocalizado
Elza Soares - Mas Que Nada
El Gran Combo - Combolu
Latin Blues Band - Lay an OZ on me Baby
Caetano Veloso - If You Hold a Stone

Show #21: October 2-9

Show #21!  In which I abandon all pretense of having a plan and just play some music... there's some upbeat funky songs, from the disco synchopation of the Soul Brothers Six to the dance-rock of David Bowie.  The middle section became a selection of funky music about space (Peter Thomas, John Keating), and then the whole show closes with some late 70s groovers, including the dollar-bin miracles 'Peg' and 'Lowdown'.  Take a trip...

Soul Brothers Six - Can You Feel the Vibrations (Instrumental)
Eddie Russ - I Heard That
David Bowie - Fashion
The Pazant Brothers - Loose and Juicy
Bohannon - Let's Start II Dance Again
The Temptations Band - Happy People (Instrumental)
J.J. Johnson - Harlem Clavinette
The Peter Thomas Sound Orchestra - Stars and Rockets
John Keating - The Unknown Planet
Andre Previn - Executive Party
Lonnie Liston Smith - Space Lady
Steely Dan - Peg
Boz Scaggs - Lowdown
Banda Black Rio - Maria Fumaca
Edu Lobo - Camaleao (Instrumental)
