Show #38: Back to Brazil!

Show #38 - I'm excited about this one - I got some new old records in the mail from Brazil, and I'm pleased to play them for you - Luis Carlos Vinhas' cool version of 'Amazonas', the unknown (to me) Nilza Magalhaes, and France's Sacha Distel does bossa nova with 'Eso Beso'.  There's also Tim Maia's great ode to his weird religion 'Rational Culture' (we live in a world of animal energy, if you were wondering), and some super soul classics.  On the Arbiter of Funk hotseat?  Donald Byrd's 'Dominoes' from the Places and Spaces album.

Show #37: European Grooves, + More Quebec!

Show #37 - Lots of great European songs in here, and some more Quebec tracks to go with last weeks installment.  Some highlights - the Brother's kick-ass funk track 'Brothers Groove', which originally came out on a Spain-only 45,  Nino Ferrer's groovy 'Les Cornichons', Isabella Ionnetti's mod stylings, Kitty Winter with Brazil meets Germany, and Open Sky Unit showing some superb live jazz grooves from Belgium.   Representing Quebec is Les Jaguars giving us the fierce Jaguar Shake, Claude Blanchard's cover of 'Tu Veux, Tu Veux Pas' with his best Gainsbourg impression, and Carole Breval in the hotseat for "Arbiter of Funk" (TM).  All that and more, on If It Rotates!

Show #36: February 12: - 18

Show #36 - Vocal moves!  Poland meets Quebec!  Lots of potential subtitles for this show, because there's some pretty interesting music (if you ask me).  I start the show off with some funky rock, and then a set of songs from Quebec, including a cover of 'Vehicle' by L'Armistis that I just picked up today.  There's also a cool song by La Revolution Francaise, and the always interesting Robert Charlebois.  Then the show takes a twist, and meanders through some vocal jazz, courtesy of some cool Polish records who's song titles I can barely pronounce.  So while I never thought I'd find myself buying Polish records from the 1980s, there's a first time (and a reason) for everything - check that cool Krystyna Pronko track and see why I did.

For the Arbiter of Funk segment this week I tackle the most out-there Bollywood track I own - 'Let's Dance for the Great Guy Bruce Lee' by Bappi Lahiri - this song has everything - banjos, space noises, bongo breakdowns, you name it.  See how it fares!

Show #35 - February 5 - 11

Show #35 - Lots of great stuff in this show - not only are there great African & Brazillian & Latin & all sorts of tracks on this show (as usual), but I've also a preview of an awesome new compilation of funky Cuban music from the great podcast Waxing Deep.  It's a seriously great compilation with 17 tracks of hard-to-find Cuban grooves, and you can hear 3 of the songs on this show - if you like 'em, order the CD!  I'm also introducing a new segment to the show - Arbiter of Funk, in which I play a borderline tune, and decide if it's good, or bad (thanks to D.C. for the idea!).  This week's victim: The Little Dabs, and their electro ode to E.T. the Extraterrestrial!
